Belgian Renaissance or ribbon lace is one often recommended for household linens such as tableclothes because of its strength and durability. The process for crafting this fine work is based on a traditional lotus pattern drawn on paper. Using this as a guide, the lacemaker sews the ribbon portions of the design on to the pattern then fills the empty spaces between using a needle to articulate a variety of stitches. When all the spaces have been filled the paper is removed. The lace piece is then further attached to the cloth, in this case fine woven linen.
